I own a 3D printing business. I printed my daughter's birthday cake toppers the day before her birthday.
I'm not proud of the timing, but here we are.
It wasn't that I forgot. I had been thinking about it for weeks. Life just kept getting in the way......work, responsibilities, the general chaos of everything else that comes with it. The cake toppers stayed on the list, just never quite at the top.
Anyway. The day before her birthday, I sat down, picked the files, and got the printer going.
The brief: pretty, dainty, all of it
My daughter has a very specific aesthetic. She likes things that are delicate and considered, nothing loud, nothing clunky, but definitely nothing plain. So the brief I gave myself was: mermaid, unicorn, butterfly, sparkly Happy Birthday sign. All of it. On one cake.
The designs came from MakerWorld, which has a genuinely impressive library of free STL files, exactly what you need the day before a birthday.
How it actually went
Each topper took under half an hour to print. Set them going, watched the first layer, went to do other things. By morning they were done, cleaned up, and ready to go on the cake.
No drama. Just a printer doing its job while I got on with the rest of the birthday prep.
The finished cake
The cake was a pull-apart cupcake situation, hand-decorated, very pink, very her. The toppers went on and it looked brilliant. She saw it and her eyes went wide, which is the only review that counts.
When she found out I'd made them on our own printer, just for her, that was the bit that made it worth the slightly frantic Saturday evening.
The same printer I used for industrial parts and engineering projects, turned out to be just as capable of bringing unicorns to life.
Honestly, this kind of job is one of my favourite things to make.....something small, personal, made for a specific person on a specific day. We do a lot of serious engineering work here and we love that too, but there's something satisfying about a unicorn that fits perfectly on a cupcake.
